About Eczema

What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, recurring inflammatory disease characterized by patches of dry, irritated skin. The protective first layer of skin is damaged and loses a lot of water, which hampers the natural healing process.

Eczema takes many forms : redness, swelling, skin that looks leathery or scaly in places, intense itching, outbreaks, cracking, etc. Babies tend to have eczema on the face and scalp, while children and adults can have it in the folds of the elbows, behind the knees, wrists, or ankles, on the hands, on the feet, or on the neck area. However, eczema can also appear in other areas [1].

When the symptoms of eczema appear suddenly, it is called a “flare up”. Many of our clients have told us that they have been pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of Pure Hazelwood products during these flare ups. Click «  here »to read their comments.

What Causes Eczema?

To this day, there is still no simple answer to this question. It has been shown that people with a family history of eczema, skin dryness (xeroderma), asthma, or allergic rhinitis (hay fever) are more at risk of developing this disease [2]. Eczema is not contagious.

There are some things that can cause eczema flare ups [3]. Here are a few of them :

  • Long hot water baths or showers
  • Stress
  • Excessive sweating
  • Drastic climate changes
  • Abrasive fabrics like wool
  • Cigarette smoke, dust
  • Using certain soaps or detergents
  • Heating, dry air

Testimonial

Hello, I used to have eczema on my right hand… Since I started wearing the Pure Hazelwood bracelet… I have had no eczema at all… Finally, the itching stopped… I do not have to find a rough patch of fabric to scratch myself… Even under pressure… Not even a little pimple… So your product… IT WORKS, AND I BELIEVE!!!

Eczema Prevention

It is very difficult to prevent eczema, but here are some things that can minimize symptoms.

  • Avoid scratching at breakouts as much as possible to prevent infections (for babies and toddlers : keep their nails short and clean, have them wear mittens as necessary);
  • Avoid triggers that can cause eczema flare-ups (see above);
  • Have a healthy diet.
  • Keep your skin hydrated at all times. We recommend the Pure Hazelwood moisturizing lotion.
