Frequently Asked Questions
All our necklaces and bracelets are made from hazel wood with anti-inflammatory properties. It’s up to you to pick your favorite style from our collection! Thousands of testimonials from satisfied customers attest no noticeable difference between the bracelets and necklaces in terms of effectiveness. Our studies of the mechanisms of hazelwood jewelry shows that it is the area of hazel wood in contact with the skin that matters. Ideally, we suggest wearing the hazelwood bracelet or necklace at all times to optimize its effectiveness: day and night, when bathing or showering, etc. It’s important to be happy with the jewelry you chose, because it won't do any good if it just sits in a drawer!
If wearing the necklace or the bracelet is problematic for you, we have a whole line of products for the whole family, including interesting alternatives solutions. Are you allowed to wear jewelry at work? If not, the anklet could be your best option. Having a hard time trying to open the lobster clasps? You might consider the single or double bracelet, which is threaded on a sturdy elastic wire and is easily rolled over your hand. Still hesitating? Why not try more than one Pure Hazelwood product! That way, if you choose not to wear the necklace one day, you'll still benefit from the bracelet’s properties. For those who suffer from severe inflammatory symptoms, combining the necklace and the bracelet is definitely worth a try!
Many of our models are made with genuine gemstones, such as Baltic amber, quartz or amethyst. We love them for their natural look and their numerous qualities (hypoallergenic, bright colours, etc.) but their properties are more difficult to validate. While some of our customers will select their jewelry according to these gemstone properties, we prefer to emphasize on the hazel wood benefits. You can get more info about the properties of the stones HERE.
Necklaces
Our 11" (28 cm) necklaces usually fit children up to 2 years old. Make sure the necklace stays under the baby’s chin so they won’t be able to put it into their mouth. You should be able to place two fingers between the necklace and the baby’s neck. We suggest 13" (33 cm) necklaces for children between 2 and 4, and 14" (36 cm) necklaces for children 4 to 10.
Bracelets
For safety reasons, we do not recommend bracelets for 3 year olds and under. Our smallest bracelet size available – 6" (15 cm) – may fit older children.
The bracelet has to be as close as possible to the skin, but not too tight, otherwise you won’t be comfortable with it and the elastic could lose its resistance over time. When in doubt, we suggest measuring your wrist and choosing the larger size. For instance, if your wrist has a circumference of 18.5 cm, you should choose the 20 cm bracelet.
Most popular sizes are 7" (18 cm) for women and 8" (20 cm) for men. Many women like to wear the 9" (23 cm) bracelet as an anklet. There may be a difference of 0.25" from one model to another (so for example, a 7" bracelet may measure from 6.75" to 7.25").
Hazelwood is highly resistant to clear water. You can keep the necklace or bracelet on while bathing or showering; it’s even recommended as it won’t lose its effectiveness and it will prevent you from forgetting to put it back on afterwards. However, we strongly suggest removing your necklace or bracelet if you go in a pool or hot tub. Chemicals such as chlorine can damage the hazelwood.
You also need to avoid any accumulation of a residue on the wood pieces, whether it’s sunscreen, perfume, self-tanner or other. You can take the jewelry off while the product penetrates your skin, then put it back on. When in doubt, keep the necklace or bracelet when showering; thus you will remove any excess that can be accumulated on the wood pieces.
Hazelwood products have a limited lifespan! After a while, the wood beads will have released all their active compounds and the jewelry won’t be as effective anymore. You can rely on the following signs: first, the symptoms slowly returning; second, the extremities of the wood beads (the flesh) that will tend to get darker with normal use. In any case, do not rely on the bark’s color, as it may change over time – and that’s normal. On average, our customers will change their bracelet or necklace after about 3 to 6 months. It’s the perfect time to try out new models, and why not matching them with your seasonal clothing!
We only use 100 % natural hazel wood, without any varnish or preserving agents. This is essential in order to allow the jewelry's mechanism of action, namely the release of polyphenols (molecules known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) in contact with your skin. This is what will bring you the relief you are looking for!
Some people say that the pieces look like paper-covered plastic beads. The "paper" is actually the bark of the wood. And underneath, although its smooth and uniform look may remind you of plastic, we assure you that it is indeed beaked hazelwood (Corylus Cornuta), freshly picked by our team in Quebec. We will choose natural materials (wood, stones) over plastic at all times for our confections.
It may happen that the bark comes off or crumbles. Some wood pieces may also crack slightly or, more rarely, split and fall off. While this may alter the general looks of the jewelry, it doesn’t affect the effectiveness of the wood. Some factors contribute to these little inconveniences such as: some drastic changes to the temperature or to the humidity level. The wood may also mechanically react to direct factors to which it is submitted, like eating habits, times of stress or more intense symptoms in a person. Therefore, these inconveniences are not considered like manufacturing defects and do not come from a quality problem with the wood.
We highly recommend keeping the jewelry on while taking a shower or bath, to preserve a good level of humidity and prevent these minor inconveniences.
Yes, it is! First Nations have been using hazelwood teething necklaces to help relieve teething pain in babies. Today, thousands of parents trust the Pure Hazelwood necklace not only for teething, but also to alleviate their children’s colic, eczema, or regurgitation. The necklace is so light that most babies won’t be bothered with it and won’t be tempted to play with it. In fact, they won’t notice that it’s even there!
The screw clasp we use on 11" (28 cm) and 13" (33 cm) necklaces meet the safety standards in children’s jewelry from CPSC – the leading authority in North America – and AFNOR in Europe. When the necklace undergoes tension, the clasp will open and release the wire to prevent any risks of strangulation. Beware of necklaces that won’t break under tension! Moreover, the beads will remain on the wire thanks to safety crushers we add on each end of the necklace, so that the child cannot access to small pieces. We work with accredited laboratories and renew our safety tests periodically to make sure the Pure Hazelwood necklaces still comply with the current standards.
That being said, please keep in mind that parents must supervise children less than 3 years old wearing any necklace. You must ensure that the child cannot bring the necklace to their mouth by choosing the right size. Also, do not allow children to handle the necklace unattended when in a crib, bed or cot. At night, many parents will wrap the necklace around their child’s ankle and then cover it with a sock or footed pajamas. That way, the child can’t grab it and the hazel wood stays in contact with their skin.
After a while, will wear out the wire used to make the necklace which can weaken significantly. In order to prevent any breakage of the necklace, remember to renew it every 3 months, and to check for signs of excessive wear regularly.
Nut/Peanut Allergies
Allergies to nuts and peanuts are food allergies (taken orally), which means the consumption of products that contain these nuts (hence the fruit, not the wood). In addition, our rigorous eco-friendly hazelwood harvesting methods ensure that the hazel branches do not touch the nuts at any time. We pay special attention when cutting the wood. Moreover, each nut is covered with a thick and rigid hull, making direct contact with the branches impossible.
Therefore, the hazelwood necklace should not cause you any reaction, but you can always ask your physician to be reassured.
Metal Allergies
Our clasps, safety crushers and spacers are certified lead-free and cadmium-free, but their plating may contain nickel, to which some people may be more sensitive. If that is your case, you can put a few coats of clear nail polish on the metal parts or cover them with a small piece of tape. You can also call us at 1-866-535-0148 or by email to have your necklace assembled on an elastic thread (a small fee may apply). Also note that most of our single bracelets contain absolutely no metal pieces.
Wood Allergies
Our studies have shown that the hazel wood is hypoallergenic, meaning there is a minimum instance of allergic reactions. The very few skin reactions reported were mostly caused by the metal clasp on the necklace, that is likely to turn around the neck, and to which some people may be more sensitive.
A negligible number of customers have mentioned a skin reaction (irritation) or physical side effect (headaches, dizziness). These very unusual and temporary reactions seem to disappear after a few days. When this happens, we suggest to take off the hazelwood jewelry and wait until the reaction is gone, then to try wearing it on small periods of time, progressively.
This may vary from person to person, depending on how severe their symptoms are, and on how often they wear the product. Some people may see a difference after only one day of wearing their necklace or bracelet. This often happens with teething babies. For others, the delay may extend to three or four weeks, especially for chronic problems such as psoriasis. In any case, we recommend our customers be patient and keep wearing their necklace or bracelet as much as possible, at all times.
To this day and for what we know, there are no contraindications to wearing our necklaces and bracelets. The hazel wood should not interfere with your medication either. Having said this, nobody knows your body like you do, so don’t hesitate to ask your physician.
There are no contraindications to wearing our products during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. On the contrary, several moms have mentioned that wearing the necklace or bracelet really helped alleviate prenatal side effects (acid reflux, constipation, etc.).
The wood that we use comes from beaked hazel (Corylus Cornuta), a small bush from the Canadian boreal forest, very different from the fruit tree mostly known in Europe (Corylus Avellana). Beaked hazel is subject to extreme temperatures and drastic season changes, which may explain why its wood produces highly active compounds that makes the bush more resistant to its natural environment. We have been able to measure the influence of several characteristics – like for instance color or diameter of the wood beads – on quality of our jewelry, thanks to scientific research we have conducted since 2009.
Our single, double and triple bracelets are on sturdy elastic string, with no clasp. Our ankle bracelets and our necklaces have a lead- and cadmium-free clasp (lobster clasp for our adult necklaces and ankle bracelets; screw clasp for 11" (28 cm) and 13" (33 cm) necklaces) and are threaded on a nylon-covered metal wire. It was carefully selected not only for its maximum abrasion resistance, but also for its stronger finish that protects against nicks, cuts and scrapes.
Our models are all made with genuine natural gemstones, glass beads or wood beads, all lead-free and cadmium-free.
Unfortunately, we stopped producing our zinc ointment cream and our moisturizing lotion in 2016, not because of quality reasons, but mostly for administrative issues. Health Canada has very strict regulations when it comes to skincare products and these regulations are constantly evolving. In order to keep our NPN, we often had to revise our formulations, make new labelling, quality tests, etc., which was very demanding. In the end, we decided to focus only on hazelwood jewelry, with our research proving their effectiveness for skin problems (psoriasis, eczema, acne, etc.).
Yes! As long as you store the jewelry properly. Ideally, each necklace or bracelet should remain sealed in its packaging, stored at room temperature and kept away from the sun. You should avoid storing the jewelry under hot, cold or dry temperatures. If you follow these tips, your hazelwood necklaces and bracelets will remain fresh for several months. The hazelwood starts releasing its active components only when in contact with skin.
Our jewelry is packed in pouches for hygienic reasons. Pouches minimize accumulations of tailings on the jewelry, like dust or humidity. Moreover, the hermetic closure preserves the freshness of the wood and therefore, optimises its effectiveness.
Unfortunately, we stopped producing the Pure Mitt teething mitten in 2023. But as it may still be available in stores, here is more info!

Hazelwood jewelry is an unconventional and very original product that can be used as a natural therapeutic solution to inflammation problems. Hazel wood has been used traditionally by Native Americans for centuries for its medicinal properties. Since 2009, research conducted by Pure Hazelwood has demonstrated that hazel wood is very rich in polyphenols, molecules known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Thousands of testimonials that we collected for more than 25 years confirm that hazelwood helps ease the symptoms related to oxidative stress and inflammation such as : teething pain, digestive disorders, skin problems (psoriasis, eczema, acne), joint pain and mouth sores, to name a few.
Hazelwood jewelry acts somehow like a skin patch. In contact with the skin, the wood releases its active compounds. Therefore, just like with a patch, the effectiveness of hazelwood jewelry does not vary with location, but whether it is in contact with the skin at all times.
